Margaret Dutton is a main character in 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story. She is the first matriarch of the Dutton Family.
She first traveled from Tennessee to Texas via train with her daughter, Elsa, and son, John, joining her sister-in-law, Claire, and her daughter, Mary Abel. She reunited with her husband, James, in Fort Worth and joined the caravan to Oregon led by Pinkerton Agent Shea Brennan. During the journey she has witnessed how some of the immigrants were having adapting to travelling in unfamiliar territory and not knowing any survival method. In Wyoming, her daughter, Elsa, was fatally shot by a Lakota warrior, and once James was able to find a piece of land to settle on, Elsa died there. Sometime between the evens of 1883 and 1893, Spencer was born. Her husband died in 1893 after being mortally wounded by horse thieves. Desperate for help, Margaret sent a letter to Jacob and Cara, requesting help in running the ranch. In 1894, one year after John died, Margaret was discovered dead from hypothermia by Jacob and Cara while John and Spencer were found starving and terrified.
