Jacob “Jake” Dutton is a main character featured in A Yellowstone Origin Story.
Biography[]
He is the older brother of James Dutton and since 1894 has been patriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch which is facing difficult times during the Great Depression which occurred almost ten years earlier than the wall street crash of 1929. Jacob assumes control of the ranch after James and Margaret die in 1894 and turns a 160 acre homestead into what would become “The Yellowstone” in modern times would see it grow to over 780,000 Acres. Jacob and Cara did not have any children of their own and unofficially adopt 16 year old John Dutton Sr. And 8 year old Spencer Dutton as their own when they were found almost starved to death when Jacob arrives.
Jacob Dutton is the first U.S. born son of the Dutton Family. His parents immigrated from the United Kingdom in the late 1820’s. Jacob’s brother James, sometime in the late 1850's after the death of their parents left for Tennessee in search of a better life. Jacob would never see James again only coming upon his grave in 1893 when a letter from Margaret, James’ wife reached him, asking for his help to run the Homestead James had built in Montana. During the Civil war, Jacob met and courted Cara, and Irish Born immigrant in New York City and married just before the events of 1883.
In 1893 at the age of 48, after receiving a distressing letter from James’ wife to come to the Homestead, he and Cara set out for Montana leaving the ever innovating New York behind. Unfortunately all that Jacob found when he arrived at the homestead was the graves of his Brother and Niece Elsa Dutton. Margaret dead from hypothermia and two starved kids that being John Dutton I and Spencer Dutton. over the next 26 years, Jacob worked tirelessly to carry on the Dutton dream and did so by founding and commissioning the Montana Livestock association. By 1923 the Dutton family has become simultaneously and equally revered and feared by the growing city of Bozeman as Jacob turns James’ small 160 acre homestead into a 250,000+ acre ranching empire.
The first season of 1923 Chronicles the life of Jacob, Cara and Spencer and how all three play an integral part of keeping the ranch afloat and seeking to destroy the people who get in their way.
