While driving the cattle up into the mountains he comes across a herd of sheep, but before he can ride back to tell Jacob, his horse is shot dead by one of the sheepherders.

Jack is trapped under is fallen horse and unable to reach his gun when he is saved by Jacob and the other cowboys. Zane Davis helps Jack get free from the horse and Jacob beats the sheepherder, Banner Creighton for shooting at his nephew and having his sheep graze on another man's land. Jack is later present when Banner and his men are lynched by Jacob, but unknowingly to them Banner gets free of the noose and survives.

The Dutton Family goes on a trip to the town, where both Jack and his father John are questioning the need of dishwashers and refrigerators. As the sun goes down Jack, Liz and a few other cowboys go to a secret dance club, there Jack and Liz share a dance. Later that night, Jack and Liz passionately sleep together at a hotel. The next day, Jack is driving the buggy on their way back when they suddenly hear the sounds of gunshots. Before anyone can see their attackers, Liz is shot in the abdomen and her father, Bob Strafford is killed. Jack is struck in the shoulder by a bullet while trying to get off the buggy. The gunshots scare the horses and the buggy takes off before Liz can leave it. Jack jumps on a horse and rides after it, managing to stop it and carry a wounded Liz behind a rock. As the sheepherders charge out of the woods towards the Duttons, Jack peaks out from behind the rock gunning down a man. Banner arrives in a motor car and opens fire upon the Duttons with a submachine gun managing to kill John and badly wound Jacob. Jack covers his aunt and mother as they run towards the rock where he is hiding, just as the sheepherders close in Zane and the other ranch hands comes to their rescue gunning down all but Banner who manages to drive off in his motor car.

Jack is sitting in a chair with a rifle in his hands, having fallen asleep while watching over Liz who has developed a fever. Cara Dutton comes in to check his bandage. Jack quietly watches Jacob lying in his bed barely alive from his injuries. He is present when Liz's mother Beverly Strafford arrives and attempts to take Liz back east telling her daughter that they killed her wedding when they killed her father. Jack is angry at Beverely for trying to force Liz away from him and she slaps him for his disrespect and is in turn slapped by Cara stating that she'll discipline her own nephew. When half their cattle are stolen by Banner and his men, Cara tells him and Zane to let the cattle go as its not worth the risk. Jack is visibly upset about this as he doesn't think its her decision to make.

Jack has become distant from Liz and spends most of his time patrolling with only revenge on his mind. He is present at his mother's funeral after she commits suicide. Jack continues to become more angry about the death of his parents and the loss of their cattle, he sulks and smashes things in rage. Later that day Jack finally stops sulking after Liz threatens to leave him. They start to plan a small wedding and Liz reveals that she is pregnant.

Jack is present when Sheriff William McDowell and Cara interview men for the job of livestock agents. He beats one of the men being interviewed with his gun after the man insults Cara.
